WHAT: Limited Submission Proposal for the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Graduate Student Awards for the Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany.

WHO: Texas A&M University graduate students who have completed by September, 2009 two years, but not more than four years, toward a doctoral degree in chemistry or a related discipline.

WHY: Travel grant to attend the Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and students in Lindau, Germany to be held June 28-July 3, 2009.

WHEN: Internal deadline of December 12, 2008.

HOW:Faculty should submit an internal proposal via email for review by the internal selection committee.   

THE FINE PRINT:

The funding agency below has limited the number of preliminary proposals to four graduate students for the ORAU Graduate Student Awards for the Lindau Meeting. If the number of graduate students wishing to submit a proposal exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. Below are due dates for the program, including the due date of the internal proposal for review by the internal selection committee, the date for announcement of the internal selection and the due date for submission to the agency.

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE:  Graduate Student Awards for the Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany.

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Graduate Student Awards for the Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany is being held in Lindau, Germany June 28-July 3, 2009.

Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics and physiology/medicine convene annually in Lindau, Germany to have open and informal meetings with students and young researchers.  The Laureates lecture on the topic of their choice in the mornings and participate in less formal, small-group discussions with the students in the afternoons and some evenings. 

Applicants for this meeting must be U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled as full-time graduate students.  Also, applicants must have completed by September, 2009 two years, but no more than four years of their work toward a doctoral degree in chemistry or a related discipline.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT:  The Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Graduate Students Meeting for the Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany is open to invited institutions.  Texas A&M University received an invitation to participate.

Eligible applicants must be full-time graduate students who are U.S. citizens and working toward a doctoral degree in chemistry or a related discipline.  Further, such applicants must have completed by September, 2009 two years, but no more than four years of their work toward a doctoral degree in chemistry or a related discipline.

AWARD INFORMATION:  ORAU will sponsor 8-10 graduate students.   

ELIGIBLE PROJECTS COSTS:   Indirect Cost (F&A) Limitations:  NONE.

COST SHARING:  NONE.     

Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines

December 9, 2008:  Deadline for an email of intent, including the name of the graduate student, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project.  Send email of intent.

December 12, 2008:  Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and dean to submit an internal proposal to the Research Policy and Development Support Office for review by the internal selection committee.  The internal proposal should include:

          (1)     a one-page personal resume;

          (2)    the name of the project being funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health or other federal agency;

          (3)     a one-page letter of reference from the applicant’s advisor; and

          (4)    an essay of no more than one page written by the applicant describing why participation in the Lindau meeting is important for the applicant’s graduate education.

This completed form should be submitted electronically for review by the internal selection committee.

Selection of a proposal will be based on ORAU guidelines. Meeting the needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account.  During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments. They may also request additional information from PI’s.

December 17, 2008: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.

December 19, 2008:  ORAU  deadline for application.
