The funding agency below has limited the number of proposals to one per institution, including the medical school. If the number of faculty wishing to submit a proposal exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. Below are due dates for the program, including the due date of the internal proposal for review by the internal selection committee, the date for announcement of the internal selection and the due date for submission to the agency.

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE: Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Program
BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Program emphasizes computing research areas and on areas that involve the innovative application of computing. Microsoft Research seeks nominees who are advancing computing research in novel directions with the potential for high impact on the state of the art, and who demonstrate the likelihood of becoming thought leaders in the field.
The objective of the Research Faculty Fellowship Program is to stimulate and support creative research undertaken by promising researchers who have the potential to make a profound impact in their research disciplines. Key characteristics of the research the program seeks to support include: innovation, creativity, novel thought, thought leadership, high potential for impact on the discipline, interdisciplinary approaches, computing at the heart of the research and relevance to the goals of Microsoft Research.
The program provides recipients considerable freedom in planning the focus of their academic research. The funds can be applied to a wide variety of uses to pursue novel research. Examples of possible research areas include, but are not limited to: interdisciplinary research, scientific computing, bioinformatics, computational biology, software engineering, and other areas where computing transforms the discipline and advances the state of the art.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT: The Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Program is open to universities in the United States and Canada. Nominees must hold a tenure-track faculty position and be in their first, second or third year of their first faculty appointment. Further, nominees must be no more than six years from the completion of their most recent Ph.D., Sc.D. or M.D/Ph.D.
AWARD INFORMATION: The Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Program anticipates making seven awards with each award worth $200,000. Fellows have considerable freedom to use the funds to advance their research agendas.
ELIGIBLE PROJECT COSTS: Indirect Cost (F&A) Limitations: NONE.
COST SHARING: NONE.
Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines
October 16, 2009: Deadline for an email of intent, including the names of the PI and co-PIs, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project. Send email of intent to osppc@tamu.edu
October 19, 2009: Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and college dean to submit an internal proposal to the Research Policy and Development Support Office for review by the internal selection committee. The internal proposal should include:
(1) An executive summary, up to three pages, based on the proposal description as outlined in the Microsoft Research program announcement;
(2) Summary budget;
(3) Project and Management Plans;

This completed form should be submitted electronically to osppc@tamu.edu for review by the internal selection committee.
*Once your internal proposal has been received with all of the necessary signatures, you will receive an email indicating it will be reviewed by the internal selection committee. If you do not receive the confirmation email, please call 5-1812.*

Selection of a proposal will be based on Microsoft Research guidelines. The needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account.
During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments. They may also request additional information from PIs.
October 30, 2009: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.
November 16, 2009: Deadline for full proposal: (due by 12 noon Pacific Time).
