Gustavus and Louis Pfeiffer Research Foundation Grants

WHAT:        Limited Submission Proposal for the Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research Foundation Grants

WHO:          Texas A&M University faculty, including Agriculture, Engineering and TTI personnel.  

WHY:          Awards will be for $75,000 for one year, subject to possible renewal of two additional one year periods.

WHEN:        Internal proposal deadline of April 20, 2009.

HOW:          Faculty should submit internal proposal via email for review by the internal selection committee.   

THE FINE PRINT:

The funding agency below has limited the number of letters of inquiry to three per institution.  If the number of faculty wishing to submit a letter of inquiry exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. Below are due dates for the program, including the due date of the internal proposal for review by the internal selection committee, the date for announcement of the internal selection and the due date for submission to the agency.                                                       

AGENCY:  Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research Foundation

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE:  Research Grants

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research Foundation Research Grants Program is designed for the advancement of medicine and pharmacy, including scientific research, post-graduate scholarship and fellowship assistance, as well as studies in nutrition, blindness, deafness and other physical disabilities.  The foundation no longer accepts applications for cancer or other basic biomedical research.

Applicants must state whether patent protection may be sought with respect to results of research funded in whole or in part by the Foundation and, if so, that the patent owner’s policy is to permit royalty free use of the protected information at tax exempt organizations for non-commercial use in research projects.

In addition, grants will not be made:  for delivery of health care services; which benefit a limited geographical area; for endowment, general institutional support, building programs, chairs or the like; where a major part of the funds are for equipment, exhibits, conferences, seminars, lectures, workshops, sabbatical leave or the like; for indirect costs; for general programs of research rather than specific research projects of limited duration; to other foundations or fund raising organizations for the purpose of their making grants to others; which are more appropriate for support by other sources, such as pharmaceutical companies for commercial applications of existing products; which involve animal experimentation (other than insects), or to institutions for projects not in the United States of America.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT:  The Pfeiffer Research Foundation Research Grants Program is open tax exempt institutions in the United States.

AWARD INFORMATION:   Awards will be for $75,000 for one year, subject to possible renewal of two additional one year periods.

ELIGIBLE PROJECT COSTS:   Indirect Cost (F&A) Limitations:  No indirect costs are allowed.

COST SHARING:  NONE.     

Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines

April 17, 2009:  Deadline for an email of intent, including the names of the PI, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project.  Send email of intent.     

April 20, 2009: Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and college dean to submit an internal proposal to the Research Policy and Development Support Office for review by the internal selection committee.  The internal proposal should include:

(1)     An executive summary, up to two pages, based on the proposal description as outlined in the Pfeiffer Research Foundation program announcement;

(2)     Summary budget;

(3)     Project and Management Plans (including team members);

This completed form should be submitted electronically for review by the internal selection committee.

*Once your internal proposal has been received with all of the necessary signatures, you will receive an email indicating it will be reviewed by the internal selection committee.  If you do not receive the confirmation email, please call 5-1812.*

Please read the RFP carefully for specific requirements of the program here.       

Selection of a proposal will be based on Pfeiffer Research Foundation guidelines.  The needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account. 

During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments.  They may also request additional information from PIs.

May 1, 2009: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.

July 25, 2009:  Deadline for letter of inquiry.  The foundation’s secretary will advise whether submission of a full application is invited and, if so, will provide details concerning the requirements for such application.
