The funding agency below has limited the number of preliminary proposals to one per institution for the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. If the number of faculty wishing to submit a proposal exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE: Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award
BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award is intended to advance the teaching and research programs of award winners in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry. The program is designed to provide discretionary funding to faculty at early stages in their careers. Criteria for selection include a commitment to education and an independent body of scholarship that signals the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. Selection is judged primarily on individual research attainment and promise, but evidence of excellence in teaching is also expected.
Descriptions of research accomplishments and future plans should be directed to a general chemical audience, avoiding the use of highly specialized terminology and undefined acronyms. Consideration will be given to publications, external funding, awards and honors, and evidence of dedication to excellence in education in and beyond the classroom.
Successful applications are characterized by compelling outside letters and strong statements on teaching accomplishments. Nominees must hold a full-time tenure-track appointment and are normally expected to be within the first five years of their academic careers.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT: The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award is open to institutions that grant bachelor’s or higher degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry.
AWARD INFORMATION: In general, 10 awards are made annually. The award is an unrestricted grant of $75,000 for a maximum of five years.
ELIGIBLE PROJECTS COSTS: Indirect Cost (F&A) Limitations: No more than $7,500 of the $75,000 award (10%) may be used for departmental expenses associated with research and education. Defrayal of academic-year salary is not allowed.
COST SHARING: NONE.
Internal Selection Procedures and Deadlines
November 26, 2008: Deadline for an email of intent, including the name of the PI, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project. Send email of intent.
December 1, 2008: Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and dean to submit an internal proposal to the Research Policy and Development Support Office for review by the internal selection committee. The internal proposal should include:
(1) A summary, up to three pages, of research and teaching accomplishments and future plans, based on the proposal description as outlined in the Dreyfus Foundation Program announcement;
(2) A detailed budget.

This completed form should be submitted electronically for review by the internal selection committee.

Please read the RFP carefully for specific requirements of the program here.
Selection of a proposal will be based on Dreyfus Foundation guidelines. Meeting the needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account. During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments. They may also request additional information from PI’s.
December 12, 2008: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.
February 5, 2009: Dreyfus Foundation deadline for full proposal.
