AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE: Carnegie Scholars Program
BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Carnegie Scholars Program is designed to support scholars whose research relates to intellectual and policy developments in Islam and Muslim communities. The overall aim is to build a critical mass of thoughtful and original scholarship in order to add to our fund of knowledge regarding Islam as a religion, as well as the cultures and civilizations of Muslim societies and communities, both in the United States and abroad. The program seeks individuals who approach scholarly research with a willingness to take intellectual risks and re-conceptualize basic assumptions surrounding societal concerns.
Possible topics for scholarship include: Islam’s relationship with international law, science, banking, property, democracy, pluralism or tolerance; traditional and modern educational systems in Muslim communities; the role and rights of women in Muslim societies; Islam as both a majority and minority religion in different societies; the rights and obligations of Muslims as individuals and Muslim communities in non-Muslim, secular states; Islam’s relations with Judaism and Christianity, as well as the non-Abrahamic faiths; Islam and nationalism; the structure and status of Muslim communities in the U. S.; the appeal of Islam; and the changing nature of Islam in the context of globalization, economic development, secularization trends and global security concerns. Any other related topic that is of significance to the understanding of Islam and Muslim communities in the modern world will also be considered.
At the end of the fellowship period Scholars will submit a written report along with books or manuscripts prepared as a result of the Corporation’s support.
