WHAT:  Limited Submission Proposal for the Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Awards 

WHO:   PIs who received doctorates between 7-1-06 and 6-30-08 in either of two areas:  mathematics, physical sciences and engineering or social sciences.  

WHY: The Council of Graduate Schools anticipates awarding two University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Awards, with each award consisting of an honorarium of $2,000 and a certificate of citation. 

WHEN:Internal proposal deadline of June 30, 2008. 

HOW: Faculty should submit internal proposal via email for review by the internal selection committee.    

THE FINE PRINT:

The funding agency below has limited the number of proposals to one per institution in each of two areas.  If the number of faculty wishing to submit a proposal exceeds the number allowed by the agency, we will conduct an internal selection process. Below are due dates for the program, including the due date of the internal proposal for review by the internal selection committee, the date for announcement of the internal selection and the due date for submission to the agency.

AGENCY PROGRAM TITLE:  University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Awards  

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The Council of Graduate Schools/

University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Awards Program is designed for PIs who completed their doctorate degrees between 7-1-06 and 6-30-08 in either of two areas:  mathematics, physical sciences and engineering or social sciences.   

Each applicant must complete an abstract up to 10 pages of his or her dissertation.  Appendices may include nontextual material, such as charts or tables.  In addition, letters from three references selected by the nominee are to be included, which evaluate the significance and quality of the dissertation work. 

The Council of Graduate Schools will look at both the methodological and substantive quality of the nominations.  The nominated dissertations should represent original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the disciplines.

AGENCIES ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT:  The University Microfilms International Distinguished Awards Program is open to regular member institutions of the Council of Graduate Schools. 

AWARD INFORMATION:   Each University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award consists of an honorarium of $2,000 and a certificate of citation.  Two awards will be presented at the annual meeting of the Council of Graduate Schools, December 3-6, 2008 in Washington, DC.  Reasonable travel expenses of the recipients will be paid.

INTERNAL SELECTION PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES

June 27, 2008:  Deadline for an email of intent, including the name of the PI, title of internal proposal and a 1-3 sentence description of the project.  Send email of intent.

June 30, 2008: Deadline to obtain signatures of approval from your department head and college dean to submit an internal proposal to the Office of Sponsored Projects for review by the internal selection committee.  The internal proposal should include:

(1)     The abstract of your dissertation based on the proposal description as outlined in the Council of Graduate Schools Program Announcement.

This completed form should be submitted electronically for review by the internal selection committee.

*Once your internal proposal has been received with all of the necessary signatures, you will receive an email indicating it will be reviewed by the internal selection committee.  If you do not receive the confirmation email, please call 5-1812.*

Please read the RFP carefully for specific requirements of the program here    

Selection of a proposal will be based on Council of Graduate Schools guidelines.  The needs of the university’s reinvestment plan will also be taken into account. 

During the selection process, the internal selection committee may contact departments and colleges for their opinions and commitments.  They may also request additional information from PIs.

July 11, 2008: The Internal Selection Committee will notify PIs of the result of the internal competition.

July 31, 2008:  Council of Graduate Schools Deadline:  Full Proposal Deadline.
